About this research
This booklet is an attempt to trace Jenifer's ancestors back as far as I can go. This research started back in the 1980's when most of Jenifer's parents generation was still alive, and a great amount of first hand information was got at that time.
It continued in 2006 when I attempted to concentrate specifically on the Furlong branch of the family tree by searching the census records and newspaper microfiche records held in the Waterford Room of Waterford City Library.
The digital age arrived in 2009 with the 1901 and 1911 census coming on line, the baptismal certificates for Waterford on rootsireland.ie in October 2011, and finally back issues for the Munster Express from 1911 were digitised and available to browse and search. Other sites consulted were ancestry.co.uk and familysearch.org. A number of Waterford commercial directories from the late 1800's were also consulted.
I should point out that I have concentrated in trying to find direct ancestors rather than broadening out the research to 1st, 2nd or 3rd cousins of the present generation. In addition, I have not gone into any detail on Jenifer's parents generation. That is for another day.
My research is in two booklets/volumes:
- Volume 1 deals with Jenifer's father Brian Furlong's ancestry. This has two major chapters, one dealing with Brian's father's family (Furlong) and the second dealing with Brian's mother's family (O'Neill).
- Volume 2 deals with Jenifer's mother Mavis Fanning's ancestry. This also has two chapters, one dealing with Mavis's father's family (Fanning) and the second dealing with Mavis's mother's family (Keane).
